* IN THEIR NATURAL HABITAT: The Red-Eared Slider Turtles are born as omnivorous, eating both plants and other animals. When they are young, these animals require a high level of animal protein. As they grow into adulthood, they become more vegetarian, or herbivores, meaning they consume only plants.
* Red-Eared Slider Turtles prey on mollusks, snails, insects and their larvae, worms, shrimp and crayfish. They can also eat fish, frogs’ eggs, tadpoles, and water snakes. They also eat different aquatic plants and algae. The Red-Eared Slider Turtle is similar to other turtles in that it has a fixed tongue and must eat their food in the water.
* IN CAPTIVITY HABITAT: For those that are in captivity, they can be fed commercial pelleted foods and also given a snacks. For the long term care of the adults, it is preferable that they are fed plant materials.
* Forty to sixty percent of the adult diet is based on dark, leafy greens such as collard, mustard, and dandelion. Twenty-five to fifty of the adult diet for a commercial turtle diet includes sticks, pellets, or trout chow. Animal protein can include such foods as live feeder fish, earthworms, cooked chicken, or earthworms. Apples, cantaloupes, melons, and berries, can also be given occasionally.
*Adults should be fed 2 to 3 times a day while the younger ones requires only daily feeding. Red-Eared Slider Turtles should be fed in the water, but they tend to be messy eaters and as a result, they can interfere with the filters needed to keep their tanks cleans. However, Red-Eared Slider Turtles may also be fed in separate containers where the water can be thrown out afterwards.
